Mary Jane was born in Canton, New York in 1863 to John and Kate Martin Bushaw. She married John Borland and gave birth to three children, Harold E., Floyd J., and Ethel. This marriage ended in divorce following a sensational alienation of affection suit brought by John Borland against A. D. Gardner. Mary Jane then married Mr Gardner, giving birth to a son, Garland who in later life changed his name to George and became a successful businessman in Binghamton, NY. owning several automobile dealerships.
