Jonathan Silas Mote II was born 21 October 1731 in Bristol, Virginia and later served in the Revolutionary war as a General; he was 44 years of age when the war began. Family legend states that he received a land grant in South Carolina for his service and his name was misspelled on the deed as Motes; from then on, he went by the name Jonathan Motes; records confirm this. He died 20 Oct. 1815 in Laurens County, South Carolina.

He was married to Audrey Orderly Collier (1724 Surry, VA, USA - 9-7-1812 Laurens Cty, SC, USA)

SURNAME ORIGINS
"de la Motte"
The forts built by our ancestors are called Motte and Bailey castles. The Motte (old French, but now part of the English language) was the highest part of the fort and was where the landowners lived, and the Bailey was inside the walls but not on the mound.

Because our ancestors were the landowners, they lived on the Motte; therefore, they were referred to as "de la Motte" or people "of the mound". That became the family name and in some documents is spelled out as one word Delamotte.
