The funeral of August Knipper,69, Petersburg, Iowa, was held on Tuesday, July 15, from the Kramer Funeral home to SS Peter and Paul Catholic church in Petersburg. The Rev. C.J.Risse read the Requiem High Mass and officiated at the graveside in SS Peter and Paul’s parish cemetery. Reverends Allan Kurt of New Vienna and H.J. Dietz of Earlville were present in the sanctuary.
In the firing squad for the military rite which was conducted by the American Legion of Dyersville, were; Walt Rettig, Vernon White, “Wink” Oehrle and Tom Jenk Color Bearers, Herb Koelker and Ole Tegeler and Jack Wedewer. Commanding the firing squad, Edward P. Domayer.
The casket bearers were all nephews; Alfred Overmann, Sylvester Loesche, Linus Thole, Eldon Knipper, Arnold Wulfekuhle and Paul Knipper.
Mr. Knipper died a t Xavier Hospital on Saturday, July 5th after an extended illness. He was born on April 10, 1889 at Oldenburg, Germany and came to this country at the age of four, and lived in the vicinity of Petersburg as a farmer the remainder of his life. He married Rose Thole at Petersburg on November 23, 1920. He served in the armed forces in World War I and was a member of the Rosary and Holy Name Society of SS Peter and Paul’s parish in Petersburg.
He is survived by his wofe and six sons, Laverne, Earlville; Gilbert, New Vienna; Ralph, Delhi; Joseph, St. Petersburg, FL; Walter of Petersburg and Rickie at home; one daughter, Kathleen, Mrs. Lavern Osterhaus, Petersburg; also sixteen grandchildren, one sister, Anna, Mrs. John Rausch of Dyersville, and two brothers, Frank of Manchester and John of Petersburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Frank and Josephine (Suedbeck) Knipper, two daughters in infancy and one sister, Mrs. William Wulfekuhle.
