Vernon J. Kress Sr.

Vernon J. Kress Sr., 83, Village of Clevland resident, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. The son of the late Theodore and Ella Buchberger Kress, he was born in Cleveland on Feb. 9, 1920. Vernon attended Red Arrow and St. Wendel Elementary School. He was employed by the Lutze Cheese Factory until 1941 when he went into service. He served in the Army Air Force in the European Theater. On Oct. 23, 1943, he was united in marriage to Delores Voss in Sheboygan. Upon separation from service, the couple resided in Cleveland. He became employed as a mechanic for the Matthias Dairy. Later, he was employed by the Amsted Ford Garage. In the 1960s, Vernon became a partner in the Kress Chizek Garage until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed his garden and fishing at Pelican Lake, Wis. He loved to tell stories and watch sports. In his youth, he was active with the Cleveland Baseball team.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; a son , Vernon "Butch" Jr., of Cleveland; and a daughter, Nancy (Mark) Gensch, of Sheboygan. Vernon was preceded in death by one son, John, and one brother, Herbert.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. John & St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cleveland. The Rev. Aaron Schoenike will officiate and burial will be at the St. Johannes Cemetery in Cleveland.

Friends may call at the Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel, 1056 Hemlock St. in Cleveland on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the hour of service.

A memorial fund has been established in Vernon Kress' name.
