She attended Mount Holyoke College where she completed her undergraduate work in 1902, then attended Columbia University New York City, to continue her studies in economics and sociology, earning a Master's Degree in 1910. By 1911, she was working for the Factory Investigation Commission in New York City and began to work for New York State as a factory inspector under Governor Alfred Smith. In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her the first female US Cabinet member as Secretary of Labor. Serving until 1945, she was instrumental in drafting nearly all of the New Deal labor legislation. After her term, she served as a guest professor at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, plus gave many lectures until death at age 85. In 1982, Frances Perkins was posthumously inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and into the US Department of Labor's Hall of Fame in 1989.
