Civil War Diarist. She was the author of two books written from her American Civil War diary: "Sad Earth, Sweet Heaven:The Civil War Diary of Lucy Rebecca Buck " was published in 1973 and "Shadows of My Heart: The Civil War Diary of Lucy Rebecca Buck" was edited by Elizabeth Baer and published in 2012. Her diary dated December 25, 1861 to April 15, 1865. She was well-educated and only 18 years-old when the war started. As the daughter of a wealthy planter with slaves and the sister of two Confederate soldiers, her diary chronicled, from her viewpoint, the events of the Civil War that happened in her hometown of Front Royal, Virginia.
