Richmond, Va. Aug. 19. — Henry J. Gerken business man, 62, of Raleigh, N. C., stricken ill here a month ago while visiting in the home of his wife's brother in law, Dr. R. L. Simpson, well known Richmond dentist, formerly of North Carolina, died late yesterday at a hospital and was buried In Hollywood cemetery this afternoon, funeral services being held from St. Thomas Episcopal church. Recently he underwent a surgical operation here for what the doctors had diagnosed as ulcerated stomach. They found a much more serious condition; it was stated and were able to afford him practically no relief.
For many years he was connected with the National Cash Register company in Raleigh. More recently he was with H. Mahler sons that city. He was a life member of the Wilmington, N. C. lodge of Elks and served as district deputy for one term organizing the Wilmington, Raleigh, Kinston and New Bern lodges.
Besides a widow, Mrs. Henrietta Bayly Gerken, he is survived by one son, George T. Gerken, Washington, and two sisters, Mrs. T. L. Rowell and Mrs. Lily Oldenbuttle, both of Wilmington.
It was said that Mr. Gerken was able to eat no solid food for more than a month prior his death.
