She was the daughter of a Baptist minister, sister of a Baptist minister, and wife of a Baptist minister. She was very active in many church activities and committees in all the towns in which she lived. She was a graduate of Hosmer Hall School in St. Louis, MO and, when her father died unexpectedly, she ran his religious newspaper for three years until it was sold. She raised five children and all except her first daughter, who died when she was nine, were educated and successful. On the day of her funeral all classes at Furman University - where her husband was President - were suspended in her honor. The 1926 Furman yearbook was dedicated to her also.
