Louisa Sauer Shewan was born Mar 15, 1896 in Erie, Pennsylvania. Her father, Rudolph Sauer (1870 - 1959), was a German immigrant. Her mother, Emma Thaler Sauer (1872 - 1912), was the daughter of German immigrants.

Louisa spent her entire life in Erie. Louisa met her future husband, William W. Shewan (1895 - 1973) while she was an employee at the local F. W. Woolworth's department store. They married in 1919 and had five children:

* Richard W. Shewan (1920 - 1944)
* Gerald A. Shewan (1923 - 2020)
* Donna Shewan Gingenbach (1925 - 1993)
* William T. Shewan (1933 - 1994)
* Mary Louise Shewan (1935 - 2020)

Her eldest child, Richard, a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army, was killed in France during World War II. Louisa became active in the Gold Star Mothers organization, serving as the Erie local organization's president. She and William were founding members of Blessed Sacrament Church in Erie.

Louisa died on Mar 9, 1984. In addition to her parents and her son Richard, she was preceded in death by her husband William and her sister, Cecilia Sauer Keller (1900 - 1979). She was survived by four of her five children (including William and Donna), sisters Mary Sauer Moritz (1889 - 1988), Anna Sauer (1898 - 1991), and Dorothy Sauer Koch (1903 - 1991).
