William J. Scanlon, Sr., 84, West Windsor, New York, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 26, 2008.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary (Salata) Scanlon; his brother, Jack Scanlon; his sister, Mary Bogart; and his son, Toby Scanlon. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sandra Sweet Scanlon; his five children, John M. Scanlon, William J. Scanlon, Jr. (Boni), Kim Morris (Ken Karle, fiance), Patrick E. Scanlon and Michael L. Scanlon (Laurie); his 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Ann Elizabeth (Betty) Lindsley and Josephine Scanlon; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill graduated from Hooper Elementary School in 1936, Union-Endicott High School in 1940, worked at IBM and took a military leave to join the Navy. At Duke University he was in the V-12 Program, and he graduated, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1945.

In 1950 he graduated from Cornell University School of Law with a J.D. He practiced law for 58 years, and was a founding partner of the law firm Scanlon & Vetrano. He was a lifetime director of ESAQHA and a lifetime member of Maine Mavericks. Bill was a member for 67 years of the American Legion Post 82 and Post 1390.

Along with his predeceased lifetime friend, Martin Dardis, they created, built, and personally maintained the Endicott Veteran's Memorial Park Monument. He was legal counsel for and extremely proud of this ongoing project.

Throughout his life, Bill was the Irish tenor of many Barbershop Quartets, including the "Simmering Four". He loved his family, singing, sailing, reading, practicing law and gardening. His passing was on a sunny Saturday, lake-side, while enjoying clams and a beer, laughing with his beloved wife.

A prayer service will be held at Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church, Washington Avenue, Endicott, and interment at Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, after. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Endicott Veteran's Memorial Park Monument, c/o John M. Scanlon, Attorney, P.O. Box 2206, Binghamton, N.Y. 13902.
