Sandra S. Scanlon, last-surviving grandchild of George F. Johnson, passed away on December 29, 2018. At the time of her passing she was surrounded by many of her loving children and grandchildren.
Sandra Scanlon was born on February 25, 1929, to Lloyd and Lillian Sweet, of Avon Road, Binghamton, and late of West Windsor, New York. At the time of her passing she resided in the family residence in West Windsor. She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Scanlon; her brother George B. Sweet, Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and by her son, Toby Scanlon
Sandra Scanlon is survived by her children and their spouses/life mates, John M. Scanlon and Molly R. Fitzgerald; William J. Scanlon, Jr. and Boni; Kim A. Morris and Ken Karle; Patrick E. Scanlon and Robyn Jacobs; and Michael L. Scanlon and Laurie; and by her thirteen grandchildren and her sixteen great-grandchildren.
In her youth, Sandra Scanlon was a naiad. She was always in a pool, lake or stream, her graceful and powerful swimming strokes catching the attention of coaches who wanted her to train for the Olympics. Her mother, who had been a synchronized swimmer wouldn’t permit it because she believed that her daughter’s education was more important. Sandra went to a private boarding high school, and she graduated with an A.S. from National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C.
Throughout her life she competed in swimming competitions, and she was the swimming and diving coach and horseback riding instructress at Champ Chiquita girls camp, near Friendsville, PA. When single, she spent part of her summers at Silver Lake, PA, with her brother and parents. While married, Sandra spent her summers with her family at Quaker Lake, PA, competing in, and many times winning canoeing and sailboat competitions. In her later years she was a member of the NYSQHA and the ESQHA, and as a board member she was actively involved with all the activities of the Maine Mavericks where three of her children and three of her grandchildren engaged in horseback riding competition. Sandra Scanlon’s vibrancy and good humor will be missed by all who knew her and warmly loved her.
