After the war, he was a Capt. and Ass't Quarter Master before being commissioned a Major in the 1st U.S. Volunteers serving in Iowa, Dakotas, and Montana. He lived for a time in Fayette, IA. After learning the hardware business in Chicago, he and his brother-in-law formed "Drake and Dayton" at McGregor, IA. Later he was at Spokane, WA and Portland, OR. He lived in Tacoma only a few months.
