Annie was a daughter of merchant John P. Hulst and his second wife, Rosina Catherine "Rose" (Gent/Genthe) of Richmond, VA. John descended from a Hulst line originally of Vlissingen, Holland, who became early settlers of Long Island, NY.

On 12/14/1886 in Richmond, VA Annie married Leonard Crawford Crump, Jr., son of Dr. Leonard Crawford Crump and Emilie Ann (Savage) of NY. Leonard's father was an assistant surgeon during the Civil War, afterwards practiced medicine and was also a merchant in Richmond, VA.

After Leonard's death, Annie first resided with her sister Ella and family in Richmond, then by 1915 moved to Manhattan with her only daughter, Mary Aletta Crump. In 1916 Annie and Aletta opened a tea room called "The Crumperie" in Greenwich, NY, the first in a string of successful shops, moving to another location whenever a more attractive location became available. Locals, as well as theatrical and literary personalities, frequented their shops, where Aletta also played spirituals and folk songs. They left a lasting impression, well after Annie's death and Aletta closed her shop to pursue volunteer work. Burial location for Mary Aletta still unknown at this time.
