Thelma Thrift Crews, 81, of the Riverside community died late Wednesday evening (May 4, 2005) at her daughter's residence after a long illness. Born in Pierce County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Dave Thrift Sr. and Kizzie Johns Thrift. Mrs. Crews was a homemaker and a member of the Riverside Chapel Baptist Church. She was one of the charter members of Winokur Baptist Church. She loved her family, church and friends and enjoyed cooking for them when she could, but most of all she loved her Lord. Her husband, Ervin Crews, a daughter, Thelma Louise Crews, and brothers, Irskay and George "Bunny" Thrift, all preceded her in death. Survivors include her children, W. Lavon Crews (Margie), Elaine Crews and Dianne Griffin, all of Folkston, Debbie Forrister (Richard) of Nahunta and Robin Batten (David) of the Riverside Community; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Catherine Morris of Folkston, M.D. Thrift of Nahunta, Inez Reddish of Hinesville, Alcene Brown of Morrow, Ga., Loutrelle Chesser and Carolyn Hewitt, both of Folkston; her step-mother, Edna Thrift, of Folkston; also several nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends. The body will be taken to her daughter's home, Robin Batten, on Riverside Rock Road, for visitation this evening starting at 6. A funeral will be held Saturday morning at 11 at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Wainright, the Rev. Edward Colley and the Rev. Reggie Herrin officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Bethlehem Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wallace and Marty Crews, Robbie and Randy Batten, Keith Miller and Jimmy Myers. Arrangements are with Chambless-Frye Funeral Home of Nahunta.
