The Very Reverend Peter Edward Gillquist fell asleep in the Lord on July 1, 2012 after a recurrance of melanoma.
Fr. Peter is one of a group of Orthodox Christian priests who were converts from Protestant denominations who also led their flocks to the Orthodox Church. This group started Conciliar Press as the publisher of AGAIN magazine and which has continued on as a publisher of Orthodox books and materials as a department of of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America as well as Ancient Faith Radio. Fr. Peter not only served as chairman of Conciliar Press, but is himself the author of a number of books including Becoming Orthodox: A Journey to the Ancient Christian Faith", Coming Home: Why Protestant Clergy are Becoming Orthodox, Love is Now, and The Physical Side of Being Spiritual. He also served as Project Director in the publication of the Orthodox Study Bible.
Fr. Peter was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Parker and Louise (Blitsch) Gillquist and became involved with Campus Crusade for Christ as a student at the University of Minnesota. As a senior in college, he decided to devote his life to the ministry, enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary, and started a chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ at the nearby Southern Methodist University. He then transferred to Wheaton College, in Wheaton, Illinois, after which he spent a number of years in Evanston, Illinois in order to do campus outreach work at
Northwestern University. He ended his work with Campus Crusade for Christ, after which, he and his family moved to Memphis, where he found a job working for Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). At this point, he presided over a "house church", as did several colleagues from Campus Crusade who were scattered across the country. This group first "discovered" the Orthodox Church in 1977, and spent nearly a decade "getting to know the Orthodox Church", first creating the Evangelical Orthodox Church and in 1987, he, along with many of these colleagues and faithful, became joined in the Orthodox Church through the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese.
Fr. Peter and his family moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 2009, after having lived in California for many years.
Fr. Peter is survived by his wife Marilyn, six children, twenty grandchildren, his stepmother, four siblings, a niece and four nephews. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be made to All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church, Bloomington, Indiana.
