"The death of Dred Finnell, while not entirely unexpected, came as a shock to our people, as he had many friends here. While serving as clerk in the legislature last January his health began to decline and gradually grew worse until he died. He complained of his stomach, and tried many remedies, but all to no avail. His case was first diagnosed as cancer of the stomach, and again as curvature of the spine, pressing upon the stomach, but we do not know whether either was correct. In all relations Dred Finnell was a man among men, and while more than the average amount of sorrows came to him during life, he bore them all bravely, ever looking on the bright side, and met the last foe unflinchingly."
