James Lee (or Levi?) Faw was the fourth of eleven known children of the Rev. Absolom J. Faw (1809–1867) and Caroline Whittington (1820–1908), who married 21 Sep 1837 at Wilkes County, North Carolina.

James married Sarah Ann Rash (went by Annie) (1848–1901) on 05 Aug 1866 at Wilkes County, North Carolina. James and Annie were the parents of nine known children, namely:

1. Carrie E. Faw (1866-1894)
2. Wylie Melvin Faw (1868–1963)
3. Sarah M. Faw (1870-???)
4. George A. Faw (1871–1899)
5. Myrtle I. Faw Bumgarner (1873-1897)
6. Hattie Faw Gaither (1875–1968)
7. John Walter Faw (1879–1907)
8. May Ann Faw Cranor (1884–1913)
9. James Clarence Faw (1890–1965)

In 1900 the parents, May and children James were living at Reddies Creek Township, Wilkes County, North Carolina. Annie said she was the mother of eight, five living. Annie was the sister of Frances Virginia Rash who married Jame's young brother, John Faw. Some records don't list Sarah as a child of the family.
