Mary Ann Faw was the eighth of eleven known children of Absolom J. Faw (1809-1867) and Caroline Whittington (1820-1908), who married 21 Sep 1837 at Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Mary first married to Thomas Benjamin Rash (1854-1891) on 15 Jan 1876 at Wilkes County, North Carolina. Mary and Thomas were the parents of eleven known children, namely:
1. Charles "Charlie" Thomas Rash (1877–???)
2. Nancy J. Rash (1877-???)
3. David Allen Rash (1878-1965)
4. Martha Anne "Mattie" Rash (1878–1900)
5. James Warren Rash (1880–1969)
6. Minnie E. Rash (1882–1904)
7. Walter J. Rash (1883–1905)
8. Myrtle Caroline Rash Sullivan (1885–1940)
9. Thomas Crittender (Crittendon?) Rash (1887–1948)
10. Munsey Augusta Rash (1889–1938)
11. Hardin Benjamin Rash (1891–1974)
Many different dates are seen for the children on various census and vital records. In 1900 the widow Mary said she was the mother of nine, seven living. Are some of the above children not really hers?
After Thomas died, Mary remarried to William (went by Will) Randolph Cloer (1867-1947) on 08 Nov 1905 in North Carolina. Mary and Will had no known children together.
In 1880 Thomas Rash (a laborer), Martha, and children Nancy and David (all four born in North Carolina) were living at the Old Town District, Grayson County, Virginia. In 1880 a T. B. Rash (age 26), M. A. (age 22), C. T. (age 3), M. A. (age 1) and J. W. (age 1 month), along with Caroline Faw (age 58) were living at Reddies River, Wilkes County, North Carolina. In 1900 the widow MARY (mother of 9, 7 living) and children James W., Minnie, Walter, Myrtle, Thomas C. and Hardin; along with Mary's widowed mother Sarah C. Faw (mother of 12, 6 living) were living at Patterson Township, Caldwell County, North Carolina. In 1910 William Cloer (a farmer) and Mary (mother of 9, 5 living) were living alone at Patterson Township, Caldwell County, North Carolina. In 1920 Will and Mary were living alone at Lovelady, Caldwell County, North Carolina. Was the Thomas and Martha living in Virginia in 1880 another separate family? Thus was Nancy and David not really children of Mary Faw Rash?
Links to Mary's parents, both of her two known husbands, two of her eleven known children and eight of her ten known siblings are included below.
