Stephen Curtiss was the sixth of seven children born to Job and Irena (Crofut) Curtiss of Weston, Connecticut. At the age of 2 his mother died from complications from the birth of his brother William and so his father's second wife Elizabeth became the only mother he really knew. In 1811 he married Sarah Hutchinson and together they raised a family of ten children, he served in the Connecticut State Militia during the War of 1812 as a fifer, and lived his entire life in Weston which later became Easton on farmland given to him by his father Job at the time of his marriage to Sarah.
Stephens grandparents were Benjamin and Phebe Curtis of Weston and David and Rachel Crofut of Redding. At the age of 58 he was laid to rest leaving behind his widow Sarah and many grandchildren.

Written for Stephen by his 4th great granddaughter on the occasion of his 225 birthday.

Never forgotten always remembered greatly loved and part of our treasure stored in Heaven above

DEAR ANCESTOR,
YOUR GRAVESTONE STANDS AMONG THE REST, FORGOTTEN AND FORLORN.
YOUR NAME AND DATE ARE CHISELED OUT ON SLATE OR OLD LIMESTONE,
IT REACHES OUT TO ALL WHO CARE, IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO MOURN.
YOU DID NOT KNOW THAT I EXIST, YOU DIED BEFORE I WAS BORN.
YET, EACH OF US ARE CELLS OF YOU, OF FLESH AND BLOOD AND BONE,
OUR HEART CONTRACTS AND BEATS A PULSE, ENTIRELY NOT OUR OWN.

DEAR ANCESTOR, THE PLACE YOU FILLED, SO MANY YEARS AGO, SPREAD OUT AMONG THE ONES YOU LEFT, WHO WOULD HAVE LOVED YOU SO. I KNOW THAT YOU LIVED AND LOVED, BUT, I WONDER IF YOU KNEW, SOMEDAY I WOULD FIND THIS SPOT, AND COME TO VISIT YOU.
