Services held for Carl Benson, 78, Saturday, Nov. 1

Funeral services for Carl Benson, 78, of Dayton were held Saturday, November 1 in the United Methodist Church at Dayton. The 1:30 p.m. service was conducted by Rev. Donald D. Samuelson, pastor of the church and Rev. Lloyd Gustafson, pastor of the United Mission Covenant Church at Harcourt. Interment was held in the Dayton Cemetery with military rites at the graveside by the Dayton American Legion Post. Arrangements were made by the Carson Funeral Home at Dayton.

Mr. Benson passed away Wednesday evening, October 29 at the Boone County Hospital following a lengthy illness.

During the funeral service vocal selections were presented by Richard Will accompanied by Guy Blair. Caring for the flowers were Mrs. Glen Beckman and Mrs. Roberta McIlvain. Bearers were Charles Beckman, Dave Cooper, Harold Benson, Ray Gabrielson, Harris Putzke and Alvin Nelson.

Carl P. Benson, the son of Bengt and Charlotte Person, was born in Sweden, November 8, 1890.

He came to the United States in 1910 and has made his home in the Dayton community since that time. He was a veteran of World War I.

Mr. Benson was united in marriage to Leona Bygel on December 31, 1923. To this union four children were born: Irene, Dick, Carol and Mary.

Carl was a member of the United Covenant Church in Harcourt and a fifty year member of the Peterson Legion Post 323. He served many years as a leader for the boys 4-H club.

Mr. and Mrs. Benson farmed in the Dayton area for many years before retiring in town.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. He passed away October 29, 1969 at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 20 days.

Survivors include his widow, Leona; one son Richard of Newton; three daughters, Mrs. Joe Sandell of Cadillac, Michigan; Mrs. Joe Rhodes of Muskegon, Michigan; and Mrs. Robert Gabrielson of Clear Lake; 13 grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters living in Sweden, Mrs. Ida Ljungren and Mrs. Jenny Karlson and one brother John in Chicago, Illinois.
