He graduated from Washington Academy, East Machias, in 1954. During the course of his life he worked for Blaisdell's mill on First Chain Lake in Wesley; Hawkins Service, Machias; and Maine Department of Transportation in Wesley, retiring from MDOT after 33 years of service in 2001. Alvah was a member of Wesley Grange and Wesley Fire Department. He loved spending time with his family and friends, and especially enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. One of his favorite camping spots was Second Machias Lake, where he and Betty would sit by the campfire with their beloved dog, Murphy, and listen to the call of the loons.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Betty; two brothers, Albert and Lawrence Hawkins; and two sisters, Carrie Albee and Rosie Lund. He is survived by one brother, Chester Hawkins of Jacksonville; three sisters, Margerite Ridlon of Ellsworth, Josephine Ambrose of Bangor and Thelma Treadwell of Clifton; five children, Sherry McLeod and her husband, Albert, of Crawford, Barbara Dennison and her husband, Kevin, Alvah L. Hawkins and his wife, Sheryl, Paul Hawkins and his wife, Donna, and Ronald Hawkins and his wife, Lyn, all of Wesley; four stepchildren, Jacquelyn Hood and her husband, Robert, of Princeton, Jocelyn Bailey and her husband, Steven, of Lufkin, Texas, Dana Weisner of New Gloucester and Melissa Weisner of Tampa, Fla.; 18 grandchildren, Brandi, Jennifer, Jamee, Jessica, Victor, Caleb, Andria, Casey, Chelsie, Danielle, Chanise, Shaina, Jessica, Tanner, Ben, Garrett, Hannah and Abby; 10 great-grandchildren, many extended family members and numerous friends.
