Nicholas and his wife Anna Katrina Kaser Schwindt came to the USA about 1880. His Son Nick had been there since 1876, and a Daughter, Mrs. Yost, since 1878. One son, Martin, Died in Russia, but all the others sons followed him here. The last arriving in 1899.

Anna passed away in 1888; Nicholas in 1890. Both were buried in the Old Baptist Church Cemetery near Bison, Kansas. Many years later the Baptist Church was destroyed by a cyclone, and all records were lost. In later years the wooden grave markers were also destroyed by a brush fire that swept over the cemetery. For many years the graves remained unmarked, but their exact location was always known. In 1967, through the efforts of descendents, a stone marker was placed on the grave sites.

Nicholas Schwindt was born in 1823 or 1822 in Russia near the Volga River in the small German settlement of Norka. He was the child of John Johannes Schwindt 1798-1876 and Catharina Jacoby Schwindt 1801-1882. He came to America about 1878 following his son Nicholas who arrive in 1876 and another daughter Christina Schwindt Yost who were already settled into the American Kansas area.

On the day that his younger son Nicholas "Nick"Schwindt 1856-1936 left for America with his young new wife, it is noted that his own father Johannes Schwindt 1798-1876 had recently died. Nicholas (the father) was grieved and said , "It is this time I have lost both a father and a son." That story was passed down for many years in our family.

It is known that Nicholas was a shoemaker and the family had their own tannery in Russia to prepare the leather for the shoe trade.

At long last, it was decided that Nicholas 1822-1890, his wife Anna Catharina Schaefer Schwindt 1822-1888, along with their adult son Heinrich Schwindt, 1858-1910 and Heinrich’s wife Katherine Baker Schwindt 1856-1829 traveled back from Norka Russia to Hamburg, Germany to board the ship “Wieland” which sales from Hamburg to New York on a 14 day trip across the Atlantic. On May 22, 1878, Nicholas is on the German ship “Wieland” and the captain is a Capt. Hebich: They are sailing out of Hamburg and he (born 1823) is with his wife, Cathe (born 1823), their son Heinrich (born 1858) and his wife Cathe (Katherina Baker Schwindt) (1858 -1929) and arrival in New York USA June 5, 1878.

When they arrived in America on June 5, 1878, the war between the states ended and American depression 1873-1879 was beginning to close as wells the “Guilded Age” 1869-1896 for the rich and powerful industrial families. US President Rutherford Hays had just replaced Ulysses S. Grant as president of the United States.. Nicholas and Heinrich took their wives and settled in Rush County, Kansas where the rest of the family that had already crossed the Atlantic to America had settled and his other son Nicholas II was living. Within 5 years of arrival in the United States, Nicholas lost his mother and a young son, Martin 1844-1883 as well as his brother Martin 1844-1883 in Russia. Heinrich, his son, would return to Russia to help transport other relatives sailing from America back to Russia in 1902.

His dear wife, Anna Katharine Schaefer Schwindt died in 1888 and was buried near their new American home in Bison, Kansas at the Old Baptist Church Cemetery. They had been married 49 years when she was laid to rest.

Nicholas lived 2 more years passing in 1890 at his home in Leoti, Kansas where he had moved to be closer to his children after she passed away. They buried him beside Anna Katharine at the Old Baptist Church Cemetery in Bison, Kansas. He was laid to rest knowing that all of his children, (except his son Martin) and grand children had made the journey to live in America.
