Homicide Near Greeleyville
Dick Barfield Slain by His Nephew, Julius Ard, in Family Row.
On last Friday night Julius Ard struck Dick Barfield with a piece of fence rail, from the effects of which Barfield died Saturday afternoon. Both parties live near Greeleyville.
It seems that Barfield was returning from Greeleyville Friday evening and stopped at the home of Mr. Colon Ard, the father of Julius Ard, and while there started to raise a disturbance, being under the influence of liquor, and when Julius Ard remonstrated with him, he started toward Julius with a knife, and the latter picked up a fence rail and struck him down with it. With assistance Barfield was able to walk to his home about 1 1/2 miles distant, and lived until Saturday afternoon.
Ard was arrested by the magistrate at Greelelyville and committed to jail to await the next term of court.
It is a very deplorable occurence, since Barfield was Ard's uncle and they had always been very friendly. Ard is a lad only about 18 years old.
Barfield leaves a Widow and several children. Ard is not married.

Ref: The County Record; Kingstree, South Carolina, Thursday, October 28, 1909 edition.

Wife: Flonde Rena Matthews Barfield(Missy) born December 1879. Died in child birth March 2, 1907 giving birth son Julius Berdell Barfield.
