Obituary - James Henry Mills, aged 90, who was associated with Patchogue's business section for 40 years up to his retirement in 1916, died Monday in his home 252 East Main Street, Patchogue. Born in Bellport on the Mills farm, where the Bellport Country club now stands, he was a son of George P. Mills and Sarah Ann Hallock Mills. He grew up in Bellport, and, when in his 20's, he became a clerk in the Mills and Hammond General Store, which occupied all four floors of the then-new building on the south-east corner of Main Street and Ocean Avenue, Patchogue. The firm then consisted of Jesse Mills and Fremont Hammond. In February 1882, J. Henry Mills and Daniel Chichester bought out the Jesse Mills' interest in the concern, the name of which was then changed to Hammond, Mills and Company. It was one of the largest department stores of its kind in this section of the county. J. Henry Mills remained with the firm until his retirement in February 1916, then Mr. Chichester took over the business. Mr. Mills leaves his wife, Mrs. Sarah Ann Hawkins Mills; a son, Henry D. Mills, and a daughter, Mrs. Marie Jamieson, all of Patchogue, and five grandchildren. On January 28 last, Mr. and Mrs. Mills observed their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary. Throughout the entire 55 years, the couple occupied the East Main Street residence, which was built for them immediately after their marriage. Mr. Mills was formerly a director of the old Patchogue bank. The funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. today from the Mills home, the Rev. A.H. Cooke, pastor of the Patchogue Congregational Church, officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Patchogue.
