Buckland, July 16 - Miss Betty J. Warfield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Howard Warfield of this town, was married Saturday to Pvt Gerald E Purinton, son of Mr and Mrs Mark L Purinton, also of this town. The wedding ceremony was performed in the home of the bride's parents by Rev. George A Merrill of Mary Lyon Church. The bridegroom is stationed at Ft Dix, N.J. BUCKLAND -- Gerald E. "Josh" Purinton, 75, of 4 Clesson Brook Road, died Saturday (7-3-04) in Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield. He was born in Shelburne on June 22, 1929, the son of Mark L. and Edith (Hall) Purinton.
He was a 1947 graduate of Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls.
He served in the Army during the Korean War from March 19, 1951, until his honorary discharge on April 16, 1953.
From 1961 until 2002, he owned and operated G.E. Purinton Inc., a general contracting company which is now owned by his son. He worked at Lamson & Goodnow Mfg. Inc. before entering the service. After the service, he worked at the former Shelburne Falls Farm Equipment. In more recent years, he was general contractor for Berkshire Gas Co. in Greenfield.
Purinton was a member of the American Legion Post 245 in Ashfield, the Ashfield Rod and Gun Club and the VFW Post 8503 in Shelburne Falls. He was also a member of the Shelburne Falls Kiwanis Club and a former member of the Buckland Volunteer Fire Department.
He was the instigator of the annual Memorial Day Hat and Sock parade in Buckland Center, an event that has continued for several years.
He enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening and working in his greenhouse. He also enjoyed his dog, Fritz. He married the former Betty J. Warfield on July 14, 1951.
Besides his wife of 53 years and his son he leaves a daughter, two brothers, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Mary Lyon Church with the Rev. Sherri Tucker, pastor, and Dr. Howard Munson, officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to Perkins Braille and Talking Book Library, 175 North Beacon St., Watertown MA 02472, or to the Mary Lyon Church, Upper Buckland Road, Buckland MA 01338.
