Civil War: Company G, 2nd California Cavalry.

John W. Davis was enlisted by Captain Daniel McLean at San Francisco, California, May 14, 1864. He received on enlistment $25 Bounty and was mustered-in as Private, Co. G, 2nd California Cavalry, by Captain Hugh Brady Fleming, 9th United States Infantry, May 16, 1864. At his enlistment John stated that he was born at Freeport, Maine, and he was 22 years old and by occupation was a Printer. His enlistment contract described him as being 5 feet 6¾ inches, with Light complexion, Gray eyes and Brown hair. Private Davis reported from the Recruiting Depot for duty at Camp Union, Sacramento, California, May 25, 1864. At Camp Babbitt, Visalia, California, August 14, 1864, Captain James Miller Ropes, Commanding, Co. G, 2nd California Cavalry, wrote to Lieutenant Frederick Weed, Regimental Adjutant, 2nd California Cavalry, at Camp Conner, Utah Territory, “Sir. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt, August 13th, from Major John Michael O’Neil, Commanding Regiment of ‘Certificate for State Bounty’ belonging to Private John M. Davis, Co. G, 2nd California Cavalry.” A unnumbered Special Order, dated Camp Union September 12, 1864, and signed by Second Lieutenant Richard A. Osmer, Commanding Recruits, stated: Lance Sergeant John W. Davis was appointed Acting Orderly Sergeant of Recruits and is to be obeyed and respected. Private Davis was appointed Sergeant to date from October 5, 1864. He was on duty with the Provost Guard, Sacramento, California, from November 2, 1864, through February, 1865, per order from Colonel Edward McGarry. Sergeant Davis was promoted Quartermaster Sergeant July 9, 1865, and mustered-out at Camp Union February 1, 1866.

John W. Davis married Marina Rillos (Ríos) at Tucson, Arizona Territory, February 28, 1886. There was no mention of this marriage in either the "Tucson Citizen" or the "Star."

John W. Davis, age 45 years and who was born at Freeport, Maine, applied for membership in Negley Post, Grand Army of the Republic, at Tucson, Arizona Territory, April 11, 1887."... I am 45 years of age, and was born at Freeport, State of Maine, now residing at Tucson, Territory of Arizona, am by occupation bookkeeper.I served during the late rebellion as follows: First enlisted May 14th, 1864, as Q. Serge. in Co. G, 2nd Regiment, California Volunteers, for the period of 3 years and was discharged on the 1st day of February, 1866, by reason of Sp. O. No. 19, of January 28, 1866, Department of California. ... I on honor recommend John W. Davis to the favorable consideration of the post. … G. W. Sanders.”

John W. Davis filed from Arizona for a Civil War veteran’s pension December 5, 1892, and received application No. 1,140,318 and certificate No. 1,030,197.

John W. Davis was listed in a 1894 Roster of Members of the Grand Army of the Republic.

In a Bureau of Pensions questionnaire returned on May 24, 1898, John W. Davis stated that he had no living children.

The Great Register of 1898 shows John W. Davis, age 48 years.

The Pima County Great Register of 1900 shows John W. Davis, age 48 years, born United States.

John W. Davis, age 59 years and a Dry Goods Salesman, was enumerated during June, 1900, at Tucson, Pima County, Arizona Territory, with Martina Davis 46. The census showed that John W. and Martina had been married for 18 years.

"John Davis, an old pioneer, is dead. He was a member of the Masonic order and Undertaker Parker now has charge of the remains awaiting instructions from friends. ("Tucson Citizen," May 5, 1903, 5:3)

"All members of Tucson Lodge No. 4, F. & A. M., are requested to meet at Masonic Hall Thursday, May 7, 1903, at 3:30 p.m., for the purpose of attending the funeral of our late brother, John W. Davis. All visiting brothers are cordially invited. O. C. Parker, Worthy Master, Geo. J. Roskruge, Secy., Tucson, Ariz., May 7, 1903. ("Tucson Citizen," 6 May 1903, 5:6)

Martina Rios de Davis filed from Arizona for a widow’s pension May 21, 1903, and received application No. 784,842, and certificate No. 563,689. She died at her home, 128 Perry St., Tucson, Arizona, August 14, 1911.
