Ruth B. Hodges, 95, of Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Trinity Grove.

Ruth was born in 1916 in Mt. Olive, N.C., the oldest of five sisters born to Jane and E. C. Bethea. She graduated from Mt. Olive High School as valedictorian of her class.

Ruth enjoyed her friends and family as well as fishing, traveling, gardening and painting. She loved life!

While a nursing student, she met Carl Hodges. Ruth and Carl were married in 1941. She and Carl lived in Charleston, S. C., during the war where Carl worked on ships in the Navy Yard and where Vicky and Glenn were both born. In 1948, Ruth and Carl moved to Wilmington, N. C., where they raised their family.

Ruth has always been an artist—from the time she sketched and sold her drawings of ships to her classmates to the end of her life when she was still painting and making cards in her studio. From 1967 to 1971, Ruth attended UNC-W and studied with her friend and well-known artist Claude Howell. Over the years, she studied with other artists and exhibited her work at numerous local and regional art shows where she won many awards. She was a member of the North Carolina Watercolor Society and the Wilmington Art Association.

Ruth is pre-deceased by her husband of 57 years, Carl W. Hodges, and her four younger sisters: Anna, Alice, Dorothy and Iris; her half sister Clarrissa, and half-brothers, Dan and Ennis.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Vicky (John) Lettmann of Minneapolis, and her son Glenn (Robbie) Hodges of Wilmington; grandchildren Angie Hodges, Wes (Anna) Hodges and Tate Hodges, Susan (Jared) Andersson, Jason (Jaci) Lettmann, and Mike (Shelly) Lettmann; great-grandchildren Elyse, Nick and Lucas; Hunter, Avery, and Quinn; Ella and Maya; Lucia and Laurel; and great-great-grandchildren, Mia, Kingston and Nick; many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

A Service of Remembering and Thanksgiving in Celebration of the Life of Ruth Bethea Hodges will be held at 11:00 am Monday, June 25, 2012 at Oleander Memorial Gardens with Rev. Margaret Hockett officiating.

The family would like to express a special note of thanks to all the caregivers and staff at Home Instead and Trinity Grove for their care and support.
