John was the 9th of 11 children of Johann Steffes and Elizabeth Johann. He was the first of their children born in the USA. He was born and died in Marshfield Township in Fond du Lac County.

On 28 Apr 1874 he married Anna Maria Ditter at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mount Calvary.

His death record states that he was buried in Mount Calvary. Since his parents are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, this is the likely place that he was buried also.
