Artist
June Yates Jenkins was born on November 12, 1892. He went by his middle name of Yates; he was the son of Thomas Jefferson Jenkins and Henrietta "Nettie" Newton Allman Wall Jenkins. Yates was the youngest of their four children Telfair, Annette and Eleanor. As a young boy growing up in the small town of Grapevine, Texas, he developed his natural talent for art. His older sisters' name was Annette Jenkins who married Fred Calvert Zethraeus. His father was Thomas Jefferson Jenkins who was a Teacher and his grandfather Eli Mathias Jenkins who was an Attorney with the Law Firm of Blake, Jenkins and Bowles of Dallas Texas for many years, before becoming a Judge in Tarrant County Texas.
June Yates Jenkins was one of the most prominent and well-respected, talented chalk ware artists during the great carnival chalk ware prize era of the early 1920's to 1950's. J.Y. Jenkins was the first artist to copyright his chalk ware art. Yates Jenkins copyrighted over 75 pieces of carnival chalk ware. His first copyright was on January 8, 1923, the last one was on June 15 1945. Hollywood studios commissioned Yates Jenkins in the 1920's and 1930's to do sculptured statues of famous celebrities such as Mae West, Clara Bow and many others of the time. His artistic talent that he enjoyed as a boy turned into a lifelong career he absolutely loved. His extraordinary ability for knowing how to make his art withstand time is what makes his chalk ware the most desirable around today. Yates Jenkins, work in carnival chalkware art is by far the most sought-after by collectors and novices alike.
June Yates Jenkins passed away on March 8, 1988 in Santa Monica, California at the age of 96. He came to rest alongside his wife of 65 years, Alleen Fletcher-Jenkins; she passed away a few years earlier in 1976. Greenlawn Cemetery in Bakersfield California is June Yates Jenkins final resting place.

A marble bench with hand carved angel statues on each side; made as a tribute to Alleen his late wife. The bench/statue was custom-made in Europe, at a cost to the estate $40,000.00 dollars in 1988 and is the only statue of it's kind at Greenlawn Cemetery.
