Gladys Thayer Hollis Angell was the sixth of seven children born to Theron V. Hollis (1848-1930) and his first wife Lois Ella Skeel Hollis (1849-1915). She was born in Pulaski in upstate New York where her father was a grocer. While she was still an infant her family oved to the village of Ilion in Herkimer Co., NY where her father found work in the factories of the Remington Typewriter Co. On October 13, 1913 in Ilion Gladys married Carleton Watson Angell (1887-1962). The couple had four children: David (b. 1915), Douglas Bertram (b. 1916), Donald Willard (b. 1919), and Ella Jennett (b. 1921). In 1922 Gladys and Carleton moved to Ann Arbor where Carleton taught art at the University of Michigan and later worked as an artist for the University's research museums of natural history.
