I never got to meet Mary, though I have spent years studying her and holding objects and documents that she owned in life. I have been blessed to know her step son and her grandson, who have allowed me to get to know her through her writings, photographs, and mementos that she thought were special enough to save.
Gathered from research, I know that she had a tragic childhood. Her mother died shortly after her first birthday. The death of her mother was difficult on her father, and he surrendered the children to his wife's sister, who raised Mary the rest of her life. Just a few months later, her baby sister joined her mother.
Mary was married twice; having three children with her first husband, one stillborn daughter with her second husband, and gained four step children from her second husband.
She was the manager of Newberry's hat department, and she was a kind-natured woman who never raised her voice.
