PIONEER LAID TO REST THURSDAY, SEPT. 21st
Alvira L. Armstrong, daughter of Elliott and Mary Headington, was born Oct. 18, 1855 at Marshall, Michigan and passed away Sept. 18, 1939 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F.O. Wells in Austin at the age of 83 years and 11 months.
She came with her parents to Decorah, Iowa in 1866. Here she grew to womanhood and taught in the surrounding schools. On Feb. 26, 1876 she was married to John L. Armstrong and until 1907, with the exception of 2 years at Elliota, MN. and 5 years at Randolph, MN. they lived at LeRoy.
In 1916 they moved to Austin, where Mr. Armstrong passed away in 1927. Ten children were born to this union, four having preceded her in death- twin boys in infancy, Nettie at 8 years, and Eugene at thirty-four. She has been a member of the First Baptist Church at LeRoy for many years.
She leaves two daughters, Mrs. F.O. Wells and Mae Armstrong of Austin; four sons John, Orval, and Millard also of Austin and Willard of LeRoy, who will cherish the memory of a loving mother. Also 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Armstrong's life was beset with all the trials of pioneer days and the raising of a large family. These trials were met with great courage and fortitude and that courage was a great inspiration to all with whom she came in contact during the many years she nursed the sick and through the declining years of her life. Always ready to forget her own problems and share the burden of others.
Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church in LeRoy Thursday afternoon, Sept. 21st at 2PM conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.F. Perron. The pallbearers were Ray Brown, O.H. Daily, Dr. A.E. Henslin, E.E. Hall, F.L. Roy, E.E. Boulet. Interment was in the LeRoy Cemetery by the side of her husband.
