A lifelong Muncie resident, Mr. Dowling was a member of First United Church of Christ. He and his wife, Hazel, who died in August of 1976, operated Dowling's Grocery on North Walnut Street until 1947.
After his retirement from the grocery business he was county veterans affairs officer and later worked as a security officer for Muncie Gear, Indiana & Michigan Electric Co. and Muncie Aviation.
He had been active in local Democratic politics, at one time working in the Center Township Assessor's office and later running for that office. He was a member and presently commmander of World War I Veterans, Muncie Barracks.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Freda Johnson, Mrs. Helen LaVelle, and Mrs. Annajene Doherty, all of Muncie; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and several nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parson Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Russell G. Siferd officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory. Friends may call at the mortuary 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and prior to services Wednesday.
Memorials may be directed to the East Central Indiana Heart Association.
