The vast real Goelet estate enterprise was overseen by administrators until it transitioned to the sons of the Goelets. Ogden's son, Robert Wilson Goelet, and Robert's son, Robert Walton Goelet, were both involved. Born a month apart in 1880, the cousins not only shared confusingly similar names but also bore a striking resemblance to each other. To alleviate confusion, Robert Walton went by the nickname Bertie. Both men graduated from Harvard in 1902 and obtained their Masters Degrees in 1903.

Despite their responsibility for managing their fathers' real estate empire, the Goelet cousins were affluent young unmarried men who relished a lively lifestyle. On multiple occasions, one of them was apprehended for speeding in his car; however, the records consistently listed Robert W. Goelet and the address 9 West 17th Street (presumably to maintain discretion by using a business rather than a residential address), making it impossible to determine which cousin was involved in each incident.
