ERMAL REECE SMITH MARRIED LIZZIE BETH THACKER 7 APR 1932 IN HAWKINS COUNTY, TENNESSEE. GOD BLESSED THIS MARRIAGE WITH THE FOLLOWING KNOWN CHILDREN: OPAL HAZEL, FRED, JAMES ARTHUR, MACK, GRADY CLAYTON, FRANKLIN HOUSTON, JAMES DAVID, RAY, JOHN AND BERNICE SMITH.

CHURCH HILL - Ermal Reese Smith, 63, of Route 1, Church Hill, died Tuesday [26 APR 1977] at 6 a.m. at Holston Valley Community Hospital following a long illness.

He was a native of Virginia, having spent most of his life in Hawkins County and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. He was also a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Thacker Smith, Church Hill; two daughters: Miss Opal Smith, Church Hill, and Mrs. Bernice Dykes, Surgoinsville; eight sons: Mack Smith, Surgoinsville, Fred, James, Jim, Grady, Ray, John and Frank Smith, all of Church Hill; mother, Mrs. Nancy Herron, Church Hill; three sisters: Mrs. Bertha Johnson and Mrs. Hazel Osborne, both of Church Hill, and Mrs. Madge Hicks, Kingsport; one brother, Grady Smith, Gate City; five half-brothers: Jay, James, Junior, Larkin and Virgil Herron, all of Church Hill; 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Wilson Funeral Home is in charge.

Funeral services for Ermal Reese Smith will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday [28 APR 1977] from Piney Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Eckel Herron, Rev. Kyle Calhoun and Rev. J. B. Hughes officiating.

Burial will follow in the Wininger Cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday [27 APR 1977] and will be taken to the church one hour before services to lie in state.

Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
