Harold Woodward was born in Truckee, California, April 19, 1905. His father was the late George Allen Woodward, who was born in 1867 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and died in 1933. Harold’s mother, the former Mary Elizabeth Brown, was born in 1871 or 1872 in Gilroy, California and died in 1950. She married George Woodward in Sacramento, California in 1890.
Harold arrived at the ranch at the age of 13, his parents having purchased it in the fall of 1919 from George and Anna Noble, who had established it about 1914. He and his siblings attended school in a framed-up tent on the Thomas homestead, about ½ mile from the ranch. He went to high school in Winnemucca.
Gold was discovered near the ranch in 1906 and a town established and named Dyke, for “Dyke” Johnson, on whose land it was found. The town of Dyke boasted about 200 citizens at one time. Mr. Johnson and another old settler, Mathew “Shorty Blue” Price, are buried near the old townsite. Harold helped bury both men. The Woodwards and other neighbors continue to care for their graves.
Harold M. Woodward married Adelle Scott in Winnemucca, February 2, 1934. Adelle was the daughter of the late Joe Scott, who was born in Bodio, Switzerland in 1887 and died in 1949. Her mother, Ida Dotta Scott, was born in Fontana, Switzerland and passed away in 1963. Adelle’s parents were married in Winnemucca, February 2, 1919. Her father operated a dairy in Winnemucca in 1928 and later built the Scott’s Shady Court motel.
The Woodwards had four children, who continue to show their family’s pioneer spirit, in helping to shape the future of the West.
