Mrs. Catharine Campbell was the third daughter of John and Mary Catharine Smith. Her parents and grandparents were born and raised in Berks county, she being of German descent. Her parents after the birth of the daughter, Eve Leiby, removed to this county, a few miles west of Newport, where the deceased was born June 23, 1823. She departed this life at high noon April 27, 1893, being sixty nine years, ten months and four days of age. On January 12, 1843, she became the wife of George Campbell, who still survives her, he being of Scotch Irish descent and six years her senior. They lived happily and peacefully together for over fifty years. Twelve or thirteen of her early married life were spent in Newport and the last thirty-six on the farm where she died. She became the mother of nine children, eight of whom survive her, viz: John S., of Oliver township; George W., of Newport; Daniel A., of Juniata township; Robert B., of Tuscarora township; Samuel J., of Juniata township; James Elias, of Oliver township; and B. Franklin, of Juniata township, all of this county, and Annie C. Kell, of Harrisburg. Theodore Calvin, a twin of Robert B., died at the age of four years and twenty two days.
Her death was directly caused by dropsy, the result of a complication of diseases, from which she has suffered for several years.
In her girlhood days Mrs. Campbell became a member of the Reformed church, of Bloomfield, under the pastorate of Rev. Jacob Scholl, by whom she was married also, and at the time of her death was a member of the Newport congregation under the charge of Rev. W. R. H. Deatrich. The Lord's Supper was administered to her, joined by husband, some of her children, brother, two sisters and other kindred on the last Sabbath she lived.
She was a kind, loving, affectionate, christian mother, a good wife, a generous and hospitable neighbor and a dear friend. She will be greatly missed in her home and in the community where she has lived so long.
"But, O! for the touch of a vanished hand,
And the sound of a voice that is still!"
The funeral services were held at her late home, conducted by her pastor, Sunday forenoon, April 30, 1893, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends of the family.
" A mother's love--how sweet the name!
What is a mother's love?
A noble, pure, and tender flame,
Enkindled from above.
To bless a heart of earthly mould;
The warmest love that can grow cold --
This is a mother's love."
