A.M. Gary was married to Rebecca Fincher Gary his first cousin. A. M.'s father was Arthur Gary and Rebecca's father was Isaac Gary, Arthur' s youngest brother.
The following is taken from B.C. Moye's Gary family history. Moye didn't document the sources for these stories. Presumably, they were part of the family oral history.
Deed Records in Refugio County, Vol. N. Page 568 record a deed to A.M. Gary from Joseph F. Smith, dated June 9, 1868 out of T.T. Williamson survey in the town site of Saint Mary located on Quarranato Creek, Quo Warranto Bayou. The price consideration was $50 cash, and a note for $90. The field notes are given, the entire area covered is not specified. According to the measurements, the tract was small -- estimate at 20 1/2 acres. The deed was not filed of record until July 1882, which tallies with the story that he moved off and left it for foreclosure.
Oral history has it that the men folks worked in a Hide and Tallow plant in Old Saint Mary, and the Census Record shows that Mr. Gary was a farmer, which indicates that the Hide and Tallow job played out.

One additional note: Moye speculates that A.M. Gary came to Texas in 1857, citing the deed for land in Parker County. However, the Census from Refugio Co. gives son Charles' state of birth as Texas; he was born in 1855.

In 1875 George Crain went up with Mr. Gary to help with the horses. They sold them at Dodge City Kan. and that night at the hotel Mr. Gary was killed and robbed.
