•Ventures, Winter, 2013, Volume 9, Issue 1:
Sister Frances Madden (Sister Anselm Mary), age 93, died on June 6, 2012. Born in Banff, Alberta, Canada, although she moved to Portland as a two year old, she became a naturalized citizen in 1945 and she still proudly claimed her Canadian roots.
After Frances graduated from St.Mary's Academy in 1935 she entered the Holy Names novitiate and made her first profession of vows in 1937. A devoted teacher, she began her ministry in Washington at St. Aloysius School in Spokane, and St. Anne's School in Seattle, starting out in the lower grades. Later, in Portland at St. Thomas More, St. Peter's and St. Ignatius, Sister Frances taught upper grades. During the summers she earned a master's degree in education from Marquettte University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and for four years studied at St. Louis University in Missouri earning a Ph.D. in education, with an emphasis on the educational philosophy of Edith Stein.
In 1963 she became the vice-president of Marylhurst College, and a year later assumed the presidency, a position which she held for seven turbulent years. After Marylhurst closed as a residential college for women only, Sister Frances found a position she truly cherished at Mount Angel Seminary, where she was loved and appreciated. The seminary made her an honorary alumna and awarded her its highest honor, the Lumen Gentium medal.
After she retired from the seminary she continued to team teach at Marylhurst University and serve as a retreat director and a member of the SEEL team (Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life). In 2010 Marylhurst University honored her for her contribution to education.
Little, strong, smart and fun, Sister Frances was an excellent listener who made lifelong friends and cherished them. She dreamed of being taller, but in terms of compassion and integrity, she towered. After a difficult year she died peacefully, surrounded by love.
