Wanda N. Helphrey, 87, formerly of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Asheville, N.C., where she has resided since 2003.

Born May 1, 1925, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of Lloyd Crocker and Edna Schenk Crocker. On Feb. 21, 1948, she married Floyd Helphrey. He died June 16, 2001.

Mrs. Helphrey graduated from Iowa State College in Ames in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. She taught home economics and physical education in Williamsburg before marrying. Later, she taught home economics at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant.

She was an active member of TTT and First United Methodist Church. She loved sewing, cooking and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, while raising a family on the farm. After retiring from farming, she and her husband moved to Mount Pleasant.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin Helphrey of San Diego and Melvin Helphrey of Asheville, N.C.; one daughter, Gayle McDonald of Williamsburg, Va.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ronald Crocker of Mount Union.


Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union.
