James Brooks, Jr (Jim) (Unknown Author, Quoted as Typed)

James Brooks, Jr was born in Lehi, UT, May 7, 1887 to James Brooks, Sr and Harriett Jackson, Bahr, Brooks. He was a life long resident of Lehi with the exception of three years. From age seven to ten his family moved to Mammoth, Utah where his father was employed as a miner.

During the time they lived in Mammoth young Jim attended the Mammoth school and church and was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on September 14, 1896 by George Hails. After they family returned to Lehi, he obtained more education at the old Franklin School house located just west of fifth west on the State Highway in Lehi. (Years later, people bout the school and remodeled it into a home. The Gary Carlton family live in this home at present time. November of 1998.)

As a boy and throughout his life Jim was a quiet, shy sort of person. Wherever he went he made lots of friends. He loved music and dancing and was an ardent baseball fan. Jim also liked to play pool.

He enjoyed having a nice team of horses and harness and a good wagon. They were his main transportation and were very important in his occupation of farming. He always said his horses would stop when he hollered "Whoa!" and a car wouldn't do that so he didn't want a car. He never did have a motor vehicle.

In his early years Jim worked for several years in the Lehi Sugar Factory. He was employed short time by the Union Pacific Railroad at Lehi. The last two or three years of his life he worked at General Refractories brick plant at 2100 N. 1100 W.in Lehi.

When Jim was nineteen he married Sarah Jane Kinder on December 17, 1907 in Provo, Utah. Their first home was on about 1900 N. 900 W. Lehi. It was a three bedroomed house. This is where their first four children were born. Marjory Reubena (Bob), James Leroy (died at 10 months), John Albert (Bert, or Ab), and Glen Irvin. They then moved to a house at about 2100 North road 1000 W. The home was a bit larger than the first and set back off the 2100 N. road. (After 1933, Ruebena's home was on the same lot only closer to the road. Since Reubena's death, her granddaughter Wendy and husband have built onto her home and live there.) Jim and Sarah's next four children were born while they lived in this home, Sarah Hazel, Ralph Lynn, Vanda Fay, and Nita May. In about 1928, they sold that home and intended to build a new one closer to the farm. At that time they moved to a home on Trinnaman lane and rented expecting to stay there until the new home was built. While living at the rented house, their ninth child, a girl, Nelda Jean was born. After several month something went wrong with the sale of the home on 2100 north. The people who had moved into the home and were supposed to buy it moved away and the Brooks' had to return and take possession of the property again and that put the dream of a new home farther into the future. They ended up living there for another eight or nine years.

Finally, in about 1934 or 35 they were able to start the home on 500 W. 2100 N. They tore down the home where they had lived since about 1916 and used the brick from that structure for the new home. While they were building and tearing down the old place they moved into a boarded up tent. Jim and Sarah and the four youngest children moved into their new home in about 1938 or 1939. That is where he lived until he died.

He and Sarah never traveled much. They had always walked nearly everywhere they went. Even in the early years they could be seen pushing the buggy with the babies inside and the older ones holding onto the side of it. Surely they used the horse and wagon for longer treks. But after all the children were raised and on their own, their daughter Hazel and her husband Thomas took them on a trip to Arizona to visit another daughter and her husband, Vanda and Slats. One other time they boarded a bus and took a trip to Payette, Idaho to visit with Jim's half brother Albert Bahr.

James Brooks, Jr died on Saturday morning at 6:35 AM, January 16, 1954 of a sudden heart attack. He was not yet 67 years old. He was buried January 19, 1954 in the Lehi City Cemetary.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife Sarah, eight of his nine children and their spouses; many grandchildren; one full sister, Mrs. Joseph (Azalia) Barnes; a half brother, Albert Bahr, and a half sister Mrs. Jonas (Harriet, "Hattie") Holdsworth.
