Born Dec. 12, 1920 in Walthall, Miss., he was the son of the late Ernest and Fannie Lorene Lucius Hillhouse. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Homer Hillhouse, Donald Hillhouse and Louis Hillhouse, one sister, Louise Hillhouse, one son-in-law, Bobby Robinson; and one daughter-in-law, Carol Hillhouse.
He was first and foremost a farmer and worked for many years for Don Medlin Farm Equipment. He served as a Pemiscot County deputy sheriff, alderman for the City of Steele, member of the Farm Bureau Board, Steele Housing Authority Board, a delegate for MFA Oil Company and he was on the Board of Production Credit Association.
At the age of 24, Hoye was ordained as a Deacon of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. After returning from Eutaw, Ala., he moved his membership to the First Baptist Church in Steele where he was since been an active Deacon.
Hoye was united in marriage to Hallie Kenley. She died at the birth of their son, James Wilburn Hillhouse. Hoye later married Ruby Mae Fullerton on Dec. 2, 1940.
Mr. Hillhouse leaves his wife, Ruby Hillhouse, of Steele; Two sons: James Wilburn Hillhouse of Galesburg, Ill., and James Hoye "Sonny" Hillhouse Jr. and his wife Doris of Memphis, Tenn.; Two daughters: Glenda Robinson and Rita Woody and her husband Will, both of Steele; One brother, E.J. Hillhouse and his wife Betty, of Huntsville, Ala.; Three sisters: Francis Brown of Belleville, Ill., Barbara Tittle of Memphis and Carolyn Spears of Jonesboro, Ark.; Nine grandchildren: Kris Robinson, and Renee Golden of Steele, Lori Adkisson and Vicky Woody of Blytheville, Ark., Dale Woody of Manila, Ark., Scott Hillhouse and Scott Ables of Rock Hill, S.C., and Matt Hillhouse and Angie Carlson of Galesburg; and Eleven and a half great-grandchildren:
Funeral services for Mr. Hillhouse were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Steele with Rev. Michael Fundrburk and Rev. Jim Mousie officiating.
Burial was at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele with Powell Funeral Home of Steele in charge of services.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Matt Hillhouse, Scott Hillhouse, Kris Robinson, Scott Ables, Dale Woody and Heath Adkisson.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons at First Baptist Church.
