John was born in Norka, Russia, to parents of German descent. He arrived in the US on Feb. 23, 1891, with his parents and siblings (see his parents' memorials).

John was married to Emilie George on Nov. 30, 1911, in Hesper, Montana. Thirteen years before his death, the family moved to Colorado, and then a year before his death, they moved to Park City, Montana.

According to the 1930 US census John and Emilie were living in Fort Collins, Colorado, and were the parents of Helen (age 17; b. ca. 1913); Eshtel (age 16; b. ca. 1914); Emilie (age 14; b. ca. 1916); John (age 11; b. ca. 1919); and Alma (age 8; b. ca. 1922 [1921]). All of the children were born in Montana.

John died in Billings at the home of relatives after being ill for several months with heart trouble and complications. He was buried on July 13, 1934. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Billings.

He was survived by his widow, his parents, five children (Helen of Billings; Esther, Amelia, John, and Alma of Park City), and five siblings (Henry, George, and Conrad Yost and Mrs. John [Emma] Glantz of Billings and Mrs. P. D. [Elizabeth] Yost of Seward, Nebraska).
