Helen Smith Edgar was the daughter of William and Margaret Smith, who both emigrated from Scotland to Canada, then Nebraska. She married Robert Edgar, also a Scottish immigrant, in Schuyler, Colfax county, Nebraska. They farmed on rented land until the late 1880's, when they established a large new family farm on the Niobrara River in Cherry county, Nebraska. In about 1899 the Edgars started their third farm, on the Girl Creek branch of Pryor Creek in Yellowstone County, Montana. She died at age 48 in St Vincent Hospital from cancer of the liver and was buried in the Billings City Cemetery that same afternoon. Helen Edgar was survived by her husband and six children: William, Robert, James, Thomas E., Mable and Pearl Edgar.
