Patrick Joseph Carlin was born on March 18, 1890 in County Mayo, Ireland to Hugh and Bessie (Howard) Carlin. A family story tells of Pat bringing the first bicycle to his village from England and putting it together with the whole village watching. He left Ireland to sail to America around 1911 on the White Star Line and worked "with the coal" on the ship. The trip took eleven days. He married Veronica B. Tobin in about 1917 in Butte, Montana. They were the parents of Patrick, Barbara, Veronica, Hugh and John Edward. He worked as a miner in Utah and Montana. Patrick died on May 11, 1950 in Butte, Montana.
Tragically, Pat's problems prevented him from raising his children. They were raised in an orphanage after the death of their mother. His son John remembered: "My father was Patrick J. (Black Patty) Carlin who was born in County Mayo, Ireland...He mined for a time...and passed away about 1949 at the old County Hospital. We had very little contact with him over the years..."
