MONK CHARLOTTE - David Michael Monk. Mike Monk, 45, of Charlotte, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 8, 2009. He passed at home, with his family, after a lengthy battle with melanoma. Mike was born June 5, 1964 into the home of David and Helen Monk of Winston Salem, NC. He graduated from the RJ Reynolds Sr. High School in 1982 and from NC State University in 1986 with a BS Degree in Political Science.

Mike's vocation was insurance. He began his career with Aetna, moving to Willis and, for the last 7 years, has worked at Scott Insurance. Mike's avocations were helping people and enjoying the outdoors. He was a member at Carmel Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the church's Building Committee.

Beyond his involvement with Carmel, Mike enjoyed giving to the community by volunteering with Boy Scout Troop 7, coaching AAU basketball and serving on the boards of Carmel Christian School and Mecklenburg Open Door. An avid backpacker and fisherman, he was perhaps happiest when spending time with those he loved in the outdoors and enjoying the majesty of God's creation.

Mike is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 23 years, Amy; their three children: Jenna, Harrison and Alexander, of the home. Also surviving are his mother, Helen Monk of Winston Salem; mother-in-law, Shirley Corts of Winston Salem; brothers Joe Monk and wife Kim of Fuquay-Varina, Andy Monk and wife Lisa of Clemmons, sister Elizabeth Bowen and husband Tom of Cary, brothers-in-law Stephen Corts and wife Cheryl; Jon Corts and wife VJ of Winston Salem; and sister-in-law, Becky Miller and husband Tim of Montgomery, AL.

He was preceded in death by his father David Monk and father-in-law, Mark Corts. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the many who have prayed and those who have cared for us in this time.

We are grateful to the staff at Blumenthal Cancer Center and especially Drs. Amin, Salo, White, Haake, Burri, Fraser and Denise Hogan. Their impeccable and tender care over the last 3 years has been extraordinary. We are appreciative, too, to the staff at Charlotte Region Hospice for their compassionate care. Most especially, the family wishes to say thank-you to our many friends within Carmel Baptist Church and the school communities of our children who so faithfully showed love and care throughout our fight and Mike's difficult journey home.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Carmel Baptist Church with visitation following. A private family burial will take place at Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to an Education Trust set up for Mike's children at Monk Education Trust, PO Box 841 Matthews, NC 28106. The Monk family is in the care of Gaskin Services, Matthews.
