JOHNSTON, CLAIR S.
Clair S. Johnston, 72, died at his home on Holt Stage in Kalispell Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Johnston was born June 9, 1901 in the Deer Park community near Columbia Falls, the son of Reuben and Floy Ella Johnston. He grew up in the Deer Park area and then worked at logging until moving to Oregon and continued logging until entering the U. S. Navy in 1942 and served with the 79th U. S. Naval Construction Battalion until receiving his honorable discharge in 1945.
He returned to Alaska and worked as a steam engineer on construction until retiring in 1962. After returning to the Flathead he had made his home in Kalispell.
Mr. Johnston was a member of the Glacier Park VFW Post No. 2252, a life time member of the St. Susitna Masonic Lodge No. 294 at Anchorage, Ala., and had served an active interest in the Deer Park Babe Ruth and Pee Wee Baseball League.
On May 17, 1926 he was married to Eva Ruth Bundy at Kalispell, who preceded him in death in 1949. He was also preceded by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
Mr. Johnston is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Charleen) Lyngstad of Columbia Falls; three grandchildren, Michael Lyngstad of Missoula, Mrs. Steven (Dee) Brown of Hungry Horse and Mrs. Edward (Loree) Cumming of Columbia Falls; four great grandchildren; one brother, Roy R. Johnston and two sisters, Mrs. Joe (Martha) Opalka and Mrs. Elmer (Minnie) Howell all of Columbia Falls.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnston will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the Van Leuven Funeral Chapel in Columbia Falls with Rev. Ernest C. Neckermann of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow in the family section in the Fairview Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to the Deer Park Babe Ruth and Pee Wee Baseball League.
