MRS. ALBERTA MERRITT JOHNSTON
Alberta Olivia Meritt was born in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Gilbert and Finette Merritt who were pioneers of that section. When a young woman, she came to Montana to make her home with her sister, Mrs. T.A. Churchill. In 1892 she was married to Leroy Johnston, the ceremony being performed by Rev. George McVey Fisher at the Fisher home in Kalispell. To this union six children were born; Mrs. Faye F. Steere of Radersburg, Montana; Mrs. Merle M. Sweeney and Mrs. Grace A. Barnum of Whitefish, Montana, and two sons Glenn and Merritt Johnston who lived at home. A daughter Gladys died in infancy.
In addition to her husband and children, Mrs. Johnston is survived by four grandchildren, Eugene and Lois Steers, Thomas and Katherine Sweeney, also by four sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Clara Majerus and W.G. Merritt of Dubuque, Iowa; Mrs. A.A. Gray and Miss Grace Merritt of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Maude Metcalf and L.G. Merritt of Helena, Montana and Charles E. Merritt of Camas.
When a young woman, Mrs. Johnston made confession of her faith and though deprived of opportunity for active church service throughout her lifetime, she kept that faith.

In July 1892, Mr. Leroy Johnston, Flathead valley, was married to Miss Alberta Merritt of Dubuque, Iowa who had come to Montana to make an extended visit with her sister, Mrs. T. A. Churchill. Mrs. Johnston passed away November 12, 1925.
