Mrs. Laura Derrick Anthony died at the home of her relative, Mrs. Nora Moyer, at Newport, yesterday, from the effects of a stroke of paralysis sustained last Friday, from which she never regained consciousness.
Mrs. Anthony was a daughter of George and Sarah (Burd) Derrick, proprietors of the old Eagle Hotel, this place (now the Eagle Rook dormitory of Carson Long Institute,) and was born January 29, 1854. She married George Anthony, a Civil War veteran, in Eureka, Illinois, in May, 1914. After his death she came east and lived with her cousin, Mrs. Bessie Hollenbaugh, in Mannsville, and part time with Mrs. Moyer.
She was a sister of the late State Senator George William Derrick, of Everett, Bedford county, and John Derrick, deceased, of Tarentum, Pa. Surviving relatives are a nephew, G. W. Derrick, of Everett; a niece, Mrs. Florence Derrick Camp, of Terentum; cousins, Mrs. Harry Lesh and Mrs. Sara Hepler, Newport; Mrs. C. M. Nicholas, Pottsville; Mrs. Bessie Hollenbaugh, Mannsville, and nephew, James Burd, of Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Anthony was a refined lady of admirable character, kind and gracious, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. Her old friends are greatly grieved over her death.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at the L. M. Kell funeral home, Newport, at 1.30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. James Moyer, of Mercersburg, and burial will be in Newport cemetery.
