Heinrich Dietrich Wilhelm Schniedewind was born in Dolderf, Niemburg District, Hanover Province, Germany on May 23, 1853. He came to the U.S., directly to Platteville, WI at the age of 17. He worked for various farmers in the area for a number of years. He joined the Peace Lutheran Church in 1871. He loved his church and served many years on the Church Council.
At age 26, he married Anna Marie Timke, age 18, on Feb 27, 1880. She died on Oct 31, 1899, age 37, leaving him with the surviving four of their five children. Fifteen months later, Heinrich married Anna C. Kase Speth, age 36 (widowed eight years earlier in 1892), in Evang Lutheran Church on Jan 30, 1901. At the time of their marriage, the combined family included Dora, age 19 and engaged to be married two weeks later, Henry, age 17, Herman (Harry), age 14, Louis, age 9, Edith, age 12, and Harry, age 11 (Herman and Edith married each other exactly ten years later).
